It takes a village.
You generally hear this phrase used to describe raising children. UK HealthCare surgeon Dr. Rajasekhar Malyala uses it to describe saving a patient from COVID-19. “It is hands-on, intensive care,” he said. “It is a labor of love, especially on the part of the nursing and respiratory staff who are putting their lives at risk doing this.”
In addition to earning his Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the Gatton School of Business and Economics at UK at the end of 2020, Dr. Henry Vasconez, professor of surgery in the division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, was invited to apply his new degree as panel member reviewing marketing proposals from fellow Gatton school students promoting UK’s Cosmetic Surgery service line.

UK HealthCare's Kentucky Children’s Hospital and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Joint Heart Program is opening an outreach clinic at PrimaryPlus-Ashland. Beginning Oct. 9, pediatric cardiologists Louis Bezold III and Bradley Keller will see pediatric and adult congenital heart patients patients on the second and fourth Fridays of every month.
A research abstract from a University of Kentucky third year medical student, Jacob Hubbuch, was awarded first place in the Education, Innovation, and Outcomes category of the American College of Surgeons’ (ACS) Medical Student research program. The research was among three top finishers featured at the ACS 2020 Virtual Clinical Congress on Saturday morning, October 3.
Sandra Beck, MD, FASCRS, FACS, and Jitesh Patel, MD, FASCRS, FACS were inducted into membership of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Academy of Master Surgeon Educators during a virtual ceremony the ACS hosted on Friday, September 25. The ceremony inducted 50 new members in the third cohort of this prestigious academy.
Rosalind Ritchie, MD, is a professor in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and was recently named chair of the college’s Faculty of Color Network, an organization with a vision of being undeniable, uncompromising, and unstoppable in pursuing diversity and inclusion. She enrolled in the first class of UK’s Women’s Executive Leadership Development Program and is the medical director of UK Chandler Hospital’s Center for Advanced Surgery.

It is with great sorrow that I share with you the passing of two vital members of the UK College of Medicine’s history, both of whom were former chairs.
Ward O. Griffen, MD, PhD, former chair of the department of surgery, passed away Tuesday, July 21, at the age of 92, and Jacqueline Noonan, MD, former chair of the department of pediatrics, died on July 23 at the age of 91. The College of Medicine community will miss both deeply.

The UK Department of Surgery mourns the passing of Ward O. Griffen, MD, PhD, 92, chair of the department from 1968 – 1984 and one of the giants in the world of American surgery. He died on Tuesday morning, July 21.
The UK Department of Surgery will welcome eight new faculty members for the 2020 academic year. The first, Dr. Carl Backer, a national leader in pediatric heart transplants and cardiac surgery, began his practice and leadership role at UK HealthCare in June. The remaining faculty members will begin practicing in August, September, and October.

With the beginning of a new academic year this July, Dr. William B. Inabnet III, The Johnston-Wright Endowed Professor and Chair of Surgery implemented a re-organization of the UK Department of Surgery that expands its divisional structure, reflecting the significant growth the department has experienced over the last decade.
The first recipients of the Zwischenberger-Rounsavall Fund for Innovation in Surgical Research and Education were announced during the annual presentation of the Department of Surgery Teaching Awards on Wednesday morning, June 10. Dr. William B. Inabnet III, Department Chair, and Dr. Jay Zwischenberger, former department chair and the fund’s sponsor, were co-presenters of the fund’s inaugural year.
