Zwischenberger – Rounsavall Fund for
Innovation in Surgical Research and Education
 
Research Support for faculty and/or eligible residents
UK Department of Surgery

The UK Department of Surgery is now accepting Letters of Interest (LOI) from its faculty members or residents with a Department of Surgery faculty mentor who seek initial funding support or bridge funding for innovative surgical research or education projects.
 
The Zwischenberger Rounsavall Fund for Innovation in Surgical Research and Education was established by Jay and Sheila Zwischenberger and G. Hunt and Cynthia Rounsavall to underscore the UK Department of Surgery’s interest in fostering a culture of original thinking in surgical research and surgery education.
 
The award is designed to support research projects that focus on innovation and feature novel approaches to surgical techniques or instrument development with potential for improved patient care outcomes. It also champions new ideas and approaches to surgery education that leverage technology and innovation.
 
Submission Guidelines
LOIs must be submitted to the Surgery Department Chair by June 4, 2021
Funds projected availability: July 1, 2021

Department of Surgery faculty or eligible residents must submit a Letter of Interest (LOI) to Dr. William B. Inabnet III at shannon.miracle@uky.edu.
Please limit submissions to one (1) LOI per faculty member or research team.
For the 2021 funding cycle, the award amount is capped at $20,000.
Please note: The endowment has not yet reached a stage where its funds may be used for salary support. 
 
LOIs must include the following information:

• Applicant name(s) and contact information.
  • Applicants’ departments or divisions in the UK College of Medicine
  • The Academic Institution of non-UK research team members.
• Identify Primary investigator (PI) from the UK Department of Surgery.
  • Primary investigator biographical sketch as it pertains to the project proposal
  • A brief summary of past and current research pertinent to the proposal
• Project abstract (350 words maximum)
  • Bridge funding proposals should identify the project’s original funding source and anticipated date of continued funding.
  • Abstracts should include a statement explaining the proposal’s merits, innovation, and its novel characteristics.
• Priority consideration will be given to project proposals that show promise of acquiring competitive funding or to create potentially patentable new technologies.

Selection Process
An interdisciplinary awards committee will review all submissions and vote on suitable proposals to be funded. The committee will consist of five (5) UK HealthCare faculty members including a bioengineer, a basic scientist, clinical surgeon, a clinician from a cardiovascular specialty, and a surgeon with competitive funding and/or patents.
