The University of Kentucky College of Medicine has received the 2021 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.

The event is a casual forum for Surgery faculty to share and discuss new and ongoing basic science and clinical research at the University of Kentucky Department of Surgery, hosted by the Division of Research.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 24, 2021) — Early in the evening of May 30, 2020, UK HealthCare trauma surgeon Dr. Zachary Warriner prepared an emergency operation to figure out the cause of a bowel obstruction. His patient, a 27-year old man, had come into the emergency department earlier that day with the vague symptoms of severe belly pain and nausea.

When Abi Recktenwald graduates from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, she will officially start a career she never imagined possible thanks to a combination of hard work, skill, and a strong faculty support system.

Going into her third year, Recktenwald had a wide range of interests across medicine and surgery. However, on her pediatric rotation early that year, she encountered a child who needed a complex plastic surgery procedure to cover a skin defect. It was through the experience she realized plastic surgery was her calling.

The COVID-19 pandemic may have forced a delay in awarding academic honors for the 2019-20 Academic Convocation, but it did not diminish the accomplishments of UK College of Medicine faculty, residents, and students during that challenging academic year. An announcement of award winners in medical education, released in April 2021, included three UK Department of Surgery faculty and a general surgery resident.

The UK HealthCare Hand Center at Turfland, a dedicated center for the diagnosis and treatment of hand, wrist, and forearm concerns is open for patients. Whether the result of trauma, overuse, or traumatic issues, patients of all ages can be seen by a team of specialty-trained hand surgeons and hand therapists.

Larry Dukes of Frankfort was living the retirement life to the fullest.

He retired from a career in sales in 2011, and since then, his days have been full of golfing, gardening, bowling and traveling with his wife Shirley to rock concerts. He even bought his dream car, a Porsche Boxster S, and traveled the backroads of Kentucky with the local Porsche club.
