Danielle S. Walsh, MD, FAAP, FACS, officially joined the UK College of Medicine Department of Surgery faculty on Friday, July 15. Along with a pediatric surgery practice at UK Children's Hospital, Dr. Walsh will serve as the surgery department's vice-chair of quality and process improvement.

The UK College of Medicine is excited to announce that Sarah Hall, MD, PhD, and Eleftherios Xenos, MD, PhD, have been elected to represent the college on the University Senate.
The University Senate is the faculty voice in the governance of our college and the University and determines broad academic policies of the University. Dr. Hall and Dr. Xenos will serve as College of Medicine representatives for three-year terms beginning in August.

In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Rodeberg has accepted the role of Division Chief of Pediatric Surgery. He will take the place of Dr. John Draus, the outgoing division chief and colleague who played an instrumental role in Dr. Rodeberg's recruitment. Dr. Draus accepted a new leadership role at a children’s hospital in Jacksonville, Florida

The University of Kentucky College of Medicine is pleased to announce the faculty, staff, and learner winners of the inaugural Mission, Vision, Pillar, and Enabler Awards.

During Match Day 2022 in mid-March, 27 graduating students from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine matched into several Surgery-related residency programs. Of those 27, University of Kentucky residency programs welcomed 13 of those students, including one match to the recently established UK General Surgery Residency Program in Bowling Green.

A proposal for standardizing Operating Room (OR) setups was among the top 10 winners in the Shark Tank pitch competition at the 2021 Veteran’s Health Administration (VHA) Innovation Experience (iEX) in Washington, DC last October. The pitch, developed through a collaboration of Lexington VA and University of Kentucky surgeons, demonstrated how standardized OR setups have the potential to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs by millions of dollars.

Faculty from the UK Departments of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering provided general reviews of past and ongoing collaborative research initiatives at a special Surgery Grand Rounds presentation in November.


Roberto Gedaly, MD, and Francesc Marti, PhD, investigators in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine Department of Surgery, have noticed a year-over-year increase in liver transplants at UK HealthCare.
“Not only has our volume gone up significantly,” Dr. Gedaly said, “we’re actually going to break a record of liver transplant patients this year.”
