The University of Kentucky Division of Cardiothoracic (CT) Surgery and Department of Surgery are excited to welcome a new faculty member, Jin Woo Chung, MD, PhD. Dr. Chung is a highly respected specialist in heart and lung transplantation, organ procurement, mechanical circulatory support, and advanced heart failure.

Dr. Chung is the second new faculty member to join the CT surgery division in 2022. Preceding him is cardiac surgeon Dr. Erinn Ogburn, who began her practice in September. But more than becoming affiliated with UK HealthCare Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dr. Chung and Dr. Ogburn also obtained clinical experience in the prestigious cardiovascular, thoracic, and cardiac surgical programs at Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Chung is yet another new physician to join the growing roster of outstanding cardiac and vascular surgeons at the UK Gill Heart and Vascular Institute. In addition, he will be integrated into the heart and lung transplant teams at UK HealthCare and participate in cardiac and thoracic organ procurement efforts.

Dr. Chung began his training in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in his native Korea. He completed his residency at Asan Medical Center at the Ulsan University College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea in 2010. He spent another two years in an advanced thoracic and cardiovascular fellowship at Konkuk University Medical Center.

In 2013, Dr. Chung accepted an offer to serve as a Clinical Fellow at the Cleveland Clinic and emigrated to the United States. For the next six years, the talented young surgeon served as a clinical fellow and clinical associate in Cleveland Clinic's Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery programs. He also became adept as a specialist in heart transplantation.

Dr. Chung officially began his practice with UK HealthCare's Gill Heart and Vascular Institute on November 1.
