New UK Department of Surgery faculty starting their practice in August include a University of Kentucky-trained vascular surgeon and the first clinical instructor in the inaugural year of the General, Endocrine, and Metabolic Surgery (GEMS) Division Fellowship.

After completing a two-year fellowship in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Fellowship at UK, Travis Hughes, MD decided to begin his professional practice as an assistant professor in the division. Dr. Hughes matched into the UK General Surgery Residency program in 2017 and has remained a part of the department of surgery since then.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Texas McGovern School of Medicine in Austin. Along with a growing body of published research, his skills as an educator earned him three resident teaching awards.

The GEMS division in the department of surgery is excited to welcome Maria Raye Anne Ng, MD, as the first learner in its recently established one-year Gastrointestinal - Minimally Invasive Surgery (GI MIS) Fellowship program. The program is in line with criteria set by The Fellowship Council for training in Advanced GI MIS.

Dr. Ng finished a General Surgery Residency at the University of New Mexico with training and experience in robotic hernia repair, bowel anastomosis, and cholecystectomy procedure skills. In addition to a handful of journal publications, she has been recognized for excellence in medical student education.
