The UK College of Medicine Department of Surgery is pleased to welcome new surgeons to its faculty roster. George Lodeiro, MD, a vascular and endovascular surgeon, and Alexander Fagenson, MD, an abdominal transplant specialist, will begin treating Kentucky patients at UK HealthCare in June 2026. These new providers are the first of a projected 11+ new faculty to join the UK College of Medicine Department of Surgery through the summer and fall.
George Lodeiro, MD, RPVI, FSVS, is a specialist in the surgical treatment of a wide range of vascular and arterial diseases. Before joining the UK Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery faculty as part of the Gill Heart and Vascular Institute, Dr. Lodeiro was in private practice for nearly two years developing a critical limb salvage surgery center in Lenoir City, Tennessee just outside of Knoxville.
Dr. Lodeiro completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. He matched into the two-year UTMC vascular surgery fellowship and completed his formal training in 2024. Along with his clinical experience, Dr. Lodeiro has engaged in extensive clinical and basic science research, including studies on perioperative and postoperative blood pressure control and its impact on patients' lengths of stay.
The UK Division of Abdominal Transplantation is pleased to welcome Dr. Alexander Fagenson as a new member of the faculty serving regional patients at the University of Kentucky Transplant Center.
Dr. Fagenson completed a residency in general surgery from Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia in 2023. In addition to his training, he spent two years serving as a surgical research fellow with Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine. Dr. Fagenson then completed a transplant surgery fellowship at the prestigious Mount Sinai Hospital and Ichan School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.
During that time, he was very productive as either a first author or co-author for over two dozen published articles in peer reviewed journals, including the Journal of American College of Surgeons, HPB, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery and American Journal of Surgery. He was also a frequent contributor to presentations at several national symposiums and conferences covering a wide range of topics at the American College of Surgeons, Southern Surgical Association, World Transplant Congress and ASTS.
Following completion of his Mount Sinai Hospital fellowship, Dr. Fagenson was as an assistant professor with WellStar Hospital and the Medical College of Georgia. His research interests include surgical education, machine perfusion in transplantation and transplant oncology. Dr. Fagenson joined UK HealthCare as the abdominal transplant service is growing expeditiously and looks forward to contributing to the new programs in living donor liver transplantation and robotic transplantation.
