The UK division of Cardiothoracic Surgery will host its annual CME symposium for primary care providers on Saturday morning, Oct. 8, beginning at 7 am in the UK Hospital Pavilion A Auditorium.

The symposium will provide updates on the full spectrum of clinical services in which CT Surgery plays a primary role. The range of topics for discussion will include a major update on lung cancer treatment strategies, heart and lung transplants, foregut surgery, trans-aortic valve replacement (TAVR), and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Dr. Timothy Mullet will begin with a discussion on community lung cancer screening, focusing on current guidelines and updates from the University of Kentucky. Dr. Ashish Maskey and Dr. Alberto de Hoyos will follow with presentations on Minimally Invasive Lung Cancer staging and SABR and Sublobar Resection for Lung Cancer, respectively.

Later in the morning, the discussion will turn toward heart and lung transplants. Dr. Michael Sekela will provide a summary view of UK’s heart transplant program over the last 25 years. In 2015, UK set a record for the most heart transplants performed by a Kentucky medical center in a single year. Dr. Alexis Shaffi, a recent addition to the CT Surgery faculty, will follow with a talk about the latest developments in lung transplants.

Other lectures will include Dr. Angela Mahan on Foregut Surgery; Dr. Paul Tessmann on ECMO and other mechanical circulatory support devices; Dr. Hassan Reda providing the latest information on Trans-Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) at UK; and Dr. Ted Wright covering minimally invasive approaches to atrial fibrillation.

The symposium will conclude with presentations from CT Surgery’s residents and fellows.
