Uterine Fibroid Program
Uterine Fibroids are a Very Common Condition
Occurring in nearly half of women in their reproductive years and up to two-thirds of women by the time they go through menopause. While many fibroids cause no problems, some can cause serious quality-of-life issues for women and require treatment.
Not all fibroids need to be treated. However, if treatment is necessary, the most common procedures are:
• Laparoscopic hysterectomy, or the complete removal of the uterus.
• Medical and surgical alternatives to hysterectomy.
• Laparoscopic myomectomy, or the surgical removal of fibroids from the uterus. This option is appropriate for women who are planning to become pregnant in the future.
• Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) - a nonsurgical option for women suffering with fibroids is now being offered. Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure which cuts off the blood supply to the fibroid(s) and causes them to shrink. There is minimal or no scarring, less pain and a much quicker recovery. Women can usually resume normal activities in a few days.
