When a major earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale hit the country of Ecuador earlier this year, Dr. Mauricio Villamar and his wife, Dr. Ana Cristina Albuja, both neurology residents at the University of Kentucky and both from Quito, Ecuador, knew they had to do something to help. The lives of thousands of Ecuadorians were devastated by the destruction of the quake. The damage was significant as were the casualties; 272 killed and over 2,500 injured or missing. Homes, businesses, roads and highways were destroyed.

More than 200 scientists and clinical investigators gathered last week to share insights and learn more about translational and clinical neuroscience research underway at the University of Kentucky. The 2016 Clinical-Translational Neuroscience Research Symposium, hosted by the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute, featured nearly 100 poster and oral presentations focused on the latest scientific advances in a wide variety of topics related to the neurosciences being conducted by UK research groups. UK HealthCare’s University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital is No. 1 in Kentucky in the U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals Rankings released today. UK HealthCare's Kentucky Neuroscience Institute (KNI) has received the "Get With The Guidelines - "Stroke Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award" by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for maintaining nationally recognized standards for the treatment of stroke patients. KNI also received the association’s Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite for meeting stroke quality measures that reduce the time between hospital arrival and treatment with the clot-buster tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke.

Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, a highly acclaimed expert in stroke and related disorders, has been named the next chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and co-director of the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute. Goldstein will be joining UK from Duke University where he is professor of neurology and Chief of the Division of Stroke and Vascular Neurology and director of the Duke Stroke Center and an attending neurologist at the Durham VA Medical Center. “We are very pleased to welcome Dr.
University of Kentucky Endowed Chair of Neuroscience Dr. Diane Snow was recently elected by her colleagues to serve as president-elect of the National Neurotrauma Society (NNS). With this appointment, Snow will hold the position of president in 2015-2016. Since joining the NNS in 2003, Snow has championed women's contributions to neurotrauma research and mentorship opportunities for young members of the profession, including students, postdoctoral fellows and young professors.

Frederick Schmitt, a professor in the University of Kentucky Department of Neurology and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, has received the 2014 Mary Carter Award from Down Syndrome of Louisville. The award recognizes outstanding service and contributions that result in improved quality of life for people with Down syndrome. Schmitt's research interests focus on understanding the basic mechanisms in brain aging and dementia. While Schmitt's name is the only one on the award, he is enthusiastic about sharing credit with others.
