Residency in Neurology

The UK College of Medicine Department of Neurology is proud of a long tradition of excellence in neurology training that was started in the 1960s by the department's founder, Dr. David B. Clark, with a mission to produce the best clinical, research and academic neurologists. The neurology program is a categorical program currently approved to enroll seven residents each year in its ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) accredited adult neurology program.

Our mission is to educate residents who will be lifelong learners and be prepared to provide cutting-edge neurological care to the citizens of Kentucky and beyond. The department of neurology at the University of Kentucky aims to be a national leader in neuroscience-related clinical care, research, and education. The residency program is vital to the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, who remain medically underserved with respect to neurological care. According to the Kentucky Institute of Medicine's Comprehensive Statewide Physician Workforce Study—2007, Kentucky had 150 neurologists, resulting in an average of 3.57 neurologists per 100,000 population compared to the national average of 4.4 per 100,000. A level, or even declining number, of new neurologists coupled with an aging population with higher incidences of neurological disorders, will lead to an acute shortage in the coming years.

All neurology residency positions are filled through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). For interviews occurring during the 2022-23 academic year, there are seven categorical adult neurology positions, beginning at the PGY1 level. Applications are accepted through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All candidates are considered and invitations for interviews are extended based upon personal statements, medical school transcript, research, publications, passing USMLE, and letters of recommendation. Exceptions due to the pandemic will be considered.

For the academic year, 2023-24 interviews will be held on a virtual platform.  If you are selected for an interview, you will join the current residents for a virtual chat the evening before your interview. This is an ideal opportunity to become acquainted with one another and relax a bit before your big day.

On the day of your interview, candidates will arrive virtually at 7 a.m. on a Zoom platform. Next, you will hear a program overview given by the department chair and program director. This is the department’s opportunity to highlight our top-notch training program and new hospital facilities. Immediately following is the opportunity to observe our Grand Rounds Conference. The remainder of the day will be split between interview sessions and a virtual hospital tour by our chief residents. Your day will conclude by 4 p.m.
