Fellowship Programs

The neuropsychology fellowship is a two year program offered at the University of Kentucky Department of Neurology, led by Jordan Harp, PhD. It is committed to patient care, teaching, and scholarship.  The ultimate goal of the fellowship is to prepare clinicians to practice independently, ethically, and competently in the field of clinical neuropsychology.  Our training corresponds to the Houston Conference guidelines and emphasizes both depth and breadth of knowledge in brain-behavior relationships.

The ACGME-accredited epilepsy fellowship is a one year clinical training fellowship led by Meriem Bensalem Owen, MD. During the course of the year, the fellow will gain expertise in clinical epileptology and related electrodiagnostic testing. The program focuses on assessment of patients from diagnosis to general medical management, to pre and post-surgical management, and treatment of epilepsy.

Under the direction of Gregory Jicha, MD, PhD, in the UK College of Medicine Department of Neurology, Kentucky Neurologic Institute, and Sanders Brown Center on Aging, this one-year fellowship is accredited by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS) and focuses on clinical care in a translational research environment.

The headache and pain fellowship is a one year fellowship accredited by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS) under the direction of Siddharth Kapoor, MD, FAHS.  It provides an opportunity for eligible physicians who wish to gain advanced training in the specialty of headache medicine. Upon successful completion of the program, fellow should be eligible for certification in headache medicine by the UCNS.

Under the direction of John T. Slevin, MD, UK Medical Center has a comprehensive clinical movement disorders program strongly integrated with its Morris K. Udall Parkinson’s Disease Research Center of Excellence and Dean’s VA Parkinson’s Disease Consortium Center. The one year fellowship focuses on research and clinical care, including evaluation and treatment of inpatients in the newly opened state-of-the-art University Hospital, outpatients in Kentucky Neuroscience Institute, and at affiliated Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital.  The fellow will gain extensive experience in diagnosis and treatment of all clinical movement disorders, instruction and experience in the use of botulinum toxin, and deep brain stimulation (DBS).  There is an extraordinary opportunity to be part a DBS pilot research project in collaboration with the Brain Restoration Center, in addition to research opportunities in Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, or atypical parkinsonism. Trainees may choose to do a second year of fellowship for ongoing research if desired and with the approval of the program director.

The ACGME-accredited vascular neurology fellowship is a one-year clinical training fellowship led by Kara Swafford, MD. During the course of the year, the fellow will gain advanced training and experience in the acute treatment of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, primary and secondary prevention of cerebrovascular disease, neurosonology, and neuroradiology.
