Dozens of neurologists, other medical professionals and researchers gathered at the University of Kentucky Nov. 25 to hear the words of Dr. Walter Koroshetz, director of the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health.
In his first year as director, Koroshetz has made it a point to travel around the U.S.
Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, a highly acclaimed expert in stroke and related disorders, has been named the next chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and co-director of the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute.
Goldstein will be joining UK from Duke University where he is professor of neurology and Chief of the Division of Stroke and Vascular Neurology and director of the Duke Stroke Center and an attending neurologist at the Durham VA Medical Center.

University of Kentucky Endowed Chair of Neuroscience Dr. Diane Snow was recently elected by her colleagues to serve as president-elect of the National Neurotrauma Society (NNS). With this appointment, Snow will hold the position of president in 2015-2016.
Since joining the NNS in 2003, Snow has championed women's contributions to neurotrauma research and mentorship opportunities for young members of the profession, including students, postdoctoral fellows and young professors.
Frederick Schmitt, a professor in the University of Kentucky Department of Neurology and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, has received the 2014 Mary Carter Award from Down Syndrome of Louisville. The award recognizes outstanding service and contributions that result in improved quality of life for people with Down syndrome.
Schmitt's research interests focus on understanding the basic mechanisms in brain aging and dementia.
While Schmitt's name is the only one on the award, he is enthusiastic about sharing credit with others.
UK HealthCare has been designated a Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission (TJC) and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
UK HealthCare is one of 63 U.S. institutions and the only in Lexington to be awarded this designation, which is the highest honor The Joint Commission awards to stroke centers.
Dr. Michael R. Dobbs, associate professor and interim chair of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine's Department of Neurology and director of the UK HealthCare/Norton Healthcare Stroke Network, has edited and published the latest edition of "Psychiatric Clinics of North America" titled “Psychiatric Manifestations of Neurotoxins.”
Building on work that he had done with co-editor Dan Rusyniak of Indiana University for Neurologic Clinics, this compilation addresses cognitive and behavioral aspects of neurotoxic exposures.
