Frederick Schmitt, a professor in the University of Kentucky Department of Neurology and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, has received the 2014 Mary Carter Award from Down Syndrome of Louisville. The award recognizes outstanding service and contributions that result in improved quality of life for people with Down syndrome. Schmitt's research interests focus on understanding the basic mechanisms in brain aging and dementia. While Schmitt's name is the only one on the award, he is enthusiastic about sharing credit with others.

UK HealthCare has been designated a Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission (TJC) and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

UK HealthCare is one of 63 U.S. institutions and the only in Lexington to be awarded this designation, which is the highest honor The Joint Commission awards to stroke centers.

Dr. Michael R. Dobbs, associate professor and interim chair of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine's Department of Neurology and director of the UK HealthCare/Norton Healthcare Stroke Network, has edited and published the latest edition of "Psychiatric Clinics of North America" titled “Psychiatric Manifestations of Neurotoxins.” Building on work that he had done with co-editor Dan Rusyniak of Indiana University for Neurologic Clinics, this compilation addresses cognitive and behavioral aspects of neurotoxic exposures.
