Kelly Burgess, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, has accepted the role of assistant chief medical officer for ambulatory primary care effective July 1, 2026.
In this role, she will assist with the operations of all ambulatory primary care clinics, working closely with primary care medical directors focusing on patient access, patient experience, clinical quality measures and operational efficiencies. She also serves as a faculty instructor in the Family Medicine Clerkship for third-year medical students.
Burgess attended Transylvania University and then the University of Kentucky, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology with honors. She earned her medical degree from the UK College of Medicine. She completed her family medicine internship and residency, as well as a one-year surgery internship, at Carilion Health Systems in Roanoke, Virginia, before returning to Georgetown, Kentucky, to start in private practice.
