College of Medicine Departments Make Strides in 2020 Blue Ridge Rankings
The University of Kentucky College of Medicine would like to recognize and congratulate its departments that made it in the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research (BRIMR) 2020 rankings.
BRIMR rankings, released each year, are reflective of top National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding to U.S. medical schools and rank institutions based on specialty. Rankings are derived from data compiled and released by the NIH shortly after the federal fiscal year closes.
Highlights of the rankings:
UK Family Medicine Reaches Blue Ridge Ranking for First Time in its History
The UK College of Medicine would like to extend special recognition to the department of family and community medicine, which has made it on the Blue Ridge rankings for the first time in its history.
The department was ranked among family medicine departments across all U.S. medical schools, landing at No. 22 with $1,377,682 in funding during FY 2020.
This accomplishment marks the department’s capability to stay ahead of the curve. Family medicine is typically more of a clinical field than a research field, but Roberto Cardarelli, DO, MHA, MPH, chair of family and community medicine, has taken initiative in bringing on new faculty and engaging existing faculty to help translate basic science research into his department’s practice.
“Our growth in research is focused on building a team science approach across the translational research spectrum. While we have several areas of emphasis, our strategy is more centered around groups working together from generating study ideas, grant development, to project execution,” Dr. Cardarelli said. “We are seeing growing numbers of physicians being part of project teams as well.”
Three Basic Science Departments Make Top 15
This year, three basic science departments from the UK College of Medicine ranked in the top 15 of their respective specialties.
Pharmacology, for the second year in a row, ranked No. 1 with $43,490,995 in NIH funding. Physiology finished at No. 11 with $13,043,885. Biochemistry was No. 14 with $12,361,912.
“The UK College of Medicine continues to prioritize research to help find solutions to health issues that impact Kentuckians,” James Geddes, PhD, vice dean for research, said. “The Blue Ridge rankings for our basic science departments reflect the strength and enthusiasm of our research teams to keep building upon that goal.”
