A 2016 UK College of Medicine graduate was awarded second place in the annual scholarship competition of the International Congress of Surgeons, (ICS), United States Section, over a weekend in early June.

Sooyeon Kim, MD, was selected as one of five finalists to present findings in an original clinical research paper she submitted for consideration in the scholarship competition at the 78th Annual Surgical Update of the ICS in Troy, Michigan. Her study was entitled “Efficacy and Cost Effectiveness of Ileac Stenting in the Operating Room and Cath Lab.” She shared authorship with Dr. David Minion in vascular surgery, Dr. John Gurley, a specialist in cardiovascular disease, and Dr. Sibu Saha, division chief of Cardiovascular Surgery.

According to Dr. Saha, an ICS member who also attended conference, the selection process is extremely competitive. Dozens of articles are submitted for committee review, he said. Earning second place is a significant achievement.

“Dr. Kim possesses a perceptive analytical mind and worked very hard on this project. She has a bright future ahead of her in whatever branch of surgery she chooses to specialize,” Dr. Saha said.

Dr. Kim, who was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, is in her first year of General Surgery residency at the University of Texas Southwestern – Dallas. In addition to a plaque, Dr. Kim received a cash award for her finish.
