Hannah McDonald, MD, a UK general surgery resident currently serving an elective research year, was selected as a recipient of a 2024 Travel Award from the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) and the Appendix Cancer Pseudomyxoma Peritonei Research Foundation (ACPMP).

Dr. McDonald was among several residents and surgical research professors to receive the $1,000 award in recognition of an outstanding research abstract submitted for presentation at the 2024 Advanced Cancer Therapies (ACT) Conference in mid-February. The award helped defray some of the travel costs for residents to attend the conference.

The abstract and presentation, entitled “Preliminary Analysis of a Phase II Comparison of Flat vs Weight-based Mitomycin C Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy” detailed the preliminary results of a clinical trial run by Dr. Prakash Pandalai and others from the Surgical Oncology division faculty. The trial compares two different doses of a standard chemotherapy used for metastatic GI cancers. The research team thinks that a lower dose may be equally effective with a better side effect profile.

“We were thrilled to be able to present our results to a room of experts at the Advanced Cancer Therapies meeting,” Dr. McDonald said.
