Four new providers began practice as UK College of Medicine Department of Surgery faculty this October. These additions add up to 10 new surgeons so far starting at UK HealthCare since the 2023-24 academic year began. The department anticipates welcoming several more new surgeons in the coming months.

In the meantime, we are proud to welcome the following new faculty:

Andrea R. Waldman, MD, FAAD, FAAP – Dermatology - Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Dr. Andrea Waldman, a specialist in pediatric and medical dermatology, officially began her practice at UK HealthCare in October 2023. Dr. Waldman, a fellowship trained triple board-certified pediatric dermatologist, is the first new provider in a strategy to re-introduce Dermatology services to UK patients and learners.

A 2013 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and a Transylvania University alum, Dr. Waldman returns to Kentucky with impressive professional and academic credentials.

Prior to her move to Lexington, she served as assistant professor and director of adolescent and pediatric dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. She completed a pediatric dermatology fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center, Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, and a residency in the field from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center.

In addition to that preparation, Dr. Waldman spent a year as a clinical research fellow in pediatric and adolescent dermatology at UC San Diego, Rady Children’s Hospital.  

Lindel C.K. Dewberry, MD – Division of Pediatric Surgery

Dr. Lindel Dewberry completed a pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. After earning her medical degree from Emory University in Atlanta, she matched into the general surgery program at the University of Colorado.

During her surgery residency, she was recognized by medical students for her excellence in teaching. Throughout her years as a resident and fellow, she was recipient of several recognitions and awards for her clinical outcomes research including the AAP Section on Surgery 2019 Clinical Research Rosenkrantz Award for her work on adolescent bariatric surgery outcomes.

She has authored more than 30 publications and plans to start an adolescent bariatric surgery program at UK.

Raphael H. Parrado, MD – Division of Acute Care Surgery, Trauma, and Critical Care Surgery

Dr. Raphael Parrado is the third new physician to join the acute care surgery and trauma faculty in as many months. Having completed his fellowship in trauma and critical care surgery at University of Cincinnati/Cincinnati Children’s Hospital earlier this year, he brings to UK a familiarity with the area as well as experience in both adult and pediatric trauma.

Dr. Parrado is a graduate of the general residency program at Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) where he distinguished himself as a medical student teacher in addition to his own surgical training. He earned his degree in medicine at Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Colombia where he is from.

Pertinent to his work in trauma at Cincinnati, he additionally holds a specialization in data science from Johns Hopkins and is currently finishing a Masters in Clinical and Translational Science with a focus on Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Cincinnati.

Christine Schaeffer, MD – Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Dr. Christine Schaeffer joins our division of plastic and reconstructive surgery faculty after completion of a hand and upper extremity fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.

Dr. Schaeffer earned her degree in medicine from the University of Cincinnati and subsequently matched into the integrated residency program in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Virginia (UVA).

During her residencv, Dr. Schaeffer earned several awards and recognitions for her work, including the UVA Health Spark Innovation Award, the Raymond F. Morgan Academic Productivity Award based on her research, and also honored for outstanding contributions to medical education.
