Jan Mock, Administrator of the Plastic Surgery Residency program at the University of Kentucky, was selected as the Outstanding Program Administrator Award of 2020 from the American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons (ACAPS). Mock is the second recipient of the annual award.

As an expression of their love and respect for Jan, all 12 UK Plastic Surgery residents submitted letters of support to the ACAPS award nomination committee.  Dr. Kant Lin, Plastic Surgery Division Chief; Dr. Lesley Wong, Plastic Surgery Residency Program Director; and Linda Combs, Academic Support Services Director for the UK Department of Surgery also submitted nomination letters for Jan to receive the award.

Jan Mock has coordinated the details of the residency program for over 20 years with four program directors. Dr. Lesley Wong said that Mock “taught her the ropes” with regard to the details of managing a surgical residency program.

In addition to arranging interviews for admission to the program and managing its continued accreditation, Mock coordinates the program’s details for each of its 12 residents throughout the span of its integrated 6-year program. The UK Plastic Surgery Residency program selects two new residents per year from among hundreds of applicants.

Mock also played a pivotal role in obtaining accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for the new Hand Surgery Fellowship program co-sponsored by UK Plastic Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery faculty.

Her supervisor, Linda Combs, praised Jan’s work ethic, gentle demeanor, and ability to foster positive discussions as traits program administrators would be wise to emulate.

ACAPS will present the Outstanding Program Administrator Award during its annual business meeting in Chicago on Saturday, May 2.
