Dr. Margaret Griffen to be 2019 Schwartz Symposium speaker
The special guest lecturer for the sixth annual Dr. Richard W. Schwartz Memorial Lecture and Surgical Symposium on Thursday, October 17 is Dr. Margaret Mary Griffen, a member of the Inova Medical Group and Division Chief of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Dr. Griffen is a 1998 alum of the UK Department of Surgery’s General Surgery Residency program and the first graduate of the Department’s Critical Care Surgery Fellowship. The title of Dr. Griffen’s lecture is still to be announced.
The Schwartz Memorial lectureship was established to honor the legacy of the late Dr. Richard W. Schwartz. Dr. Schwartz’s passion and excellence in gastrointestinal surgery, surgical education, and the development of physician leaders were well-known globally before his untimely death in 2010. His influence touched all who had the honor of working alongside him. Dr. Griffen is one among many practicing surgeons to have had the privilege of Dr. Schwartz’ mentorship from medical school through her residency training.
To honor his legacy, his wife, Janet Schwartz Evans, collaborated with Drs. Andrew Bernard and David Sloan to establish the endowed memorial lectureship in 2014.
Dr. Griffen has a special interest in caring for critically ill surgical patients and manages those who present a wide variety of illnesses and complex pathologies in the Washington, DC and Alexandria, Virginia area. Her decision to become a physician and surgeon was a result of watching her father, Dr. Ward Griffen, a former Chair of the UK Department of Surgery, provide care to his patients. He served as chair from 1967 to 1984. In addition to her father’s influence, Dr. Griffen credits the academic environment at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine as the influence which kindled her desire to teach future surgeons while caring for patients.
“The ultimate goal is always expert care for all patients,” she said.
Dr. Griffen currently resides in Fairfax, Virginia.
