Dr. Jeb Hallett is guest lecturer at the 3rd Annual Dr. Gordon Hyde Lectureship in Vascular Surgery
Dr. John “Jeb” Hallett, Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina, gave a lecture on curiosity as an important trait for surgeons to cultivate. Dr. Hallett was the special guest speaker for the third annual Dr. Gordon Hyde Lectureship in Vascular Surgery on Wednesday, April 11.
The lecture, part of the Division of General Surgery’s weekly grand rounds presentations for faculty and general surgery residents, also welcomed alumni from the UK Vascular Surgery Fellowship and retired UK faculty members, including Dr. Gordon Hyde in his famous bow tie.
During his presentation, Dr. Hallett discussed how curiosity and the courage to explore new ideas are important tools for professional surgeons seeking long and satisfying careers. Development of these traits lead to a career marked by continuous improvement of surgical skills and patient engagement. He concluded with some suggestions about where young surgeons might focus their curiosity:
- Advancing computer assisted or robotic surgery.
- Focusing on more precise decision making, less invasive and less costly surgical options
- Developing biologic solutions to disease.
- Exploring the applications of telehealth and telemedicine.
Following the lecture, Dr. Hyde and Dr. Hallett discussed surgical cases presented by Drs. Cheryl Richie and Michael Bounds, the current Vascular Fellows, and Dr. Peter Stafford, General Surgery chief resident.
The event concluded with an afternoon at Keeneland during its annual spring meet.
