The University of Kentucky College of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine congratulates faculty member Aibek Mirrakhimov, MD, on the recent publication of his book, “Anesthesiology Demystified for the Internist: Core Concepts in Perioperative Decision-Making.”

“This book was developed to bridge the gap between anesthesiology and internal medicine, emphasizing practical, clinically relevant decision-making in the perioperative setting," said Dr. Mirrakhimov. "My training and background in both internal medicine and anesthesiology have shaped my perspective on the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly in complex patient care."

Dr. Mirrakhimov’s work reflects a strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and education, offering insight into anesthesiology’s role across perioperative care. The book draws on clinical experience and academic expertise to help bridge understanding between anesthesiology and internal medicine, highlighting the importance of shared decision-making in patient care.

"A major focus of this book is to help internists better understand the fundamental aspects of anesthesiology decision-making and the intraoperative environment, to enhance their effectiveness as perioperative medicine consultants," said Dr. Mirrakhimov. "While many perioperative medicine textbooks appropriately emphasize disease-specific management, they often provide limited insight into the realities of the operating room environment and the factors that influence intraoperative decision-making. These include considerations such as surgical positioning, patient-specific characteristics including baseline comorbid conditions and perioperative anxiety, intraprocedural access to the airway when needed, and other dynamic elements that directly impact anesthetic management. I hope that this book will be found useful and relevant to non-anesthesiologists involved in perioperative care.”

This achievement underscores the anesthesiology department’s broader mission within the UK College of Medicine to advance clinical excellence, education, and scholarly contribution in service to patients across the Commonwealth of Kentucky and beyond.
