One-Year ACGME-Accredited Program

The UK College of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine offers a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology. The fellowship consists of 12 months of full-time training beginning after satisfactory completion of a core anesthesiology residency program. The program is structured to provide a wide variety of clinical exposure in the operating room, critical care units, catheterization laboratory, and non-operating room sites including pediatric endoscopy suites and MRI’s. In addition to a robust clinical experience, mentorship by well-trained faculty and opportunities to mature as teachers and expert consultants will solidify the professional growth of the fellow.

Pediatric Anesthesiology Clinical Experience

The fellow will complete all rotations and training in Lexington, KY. The majority of the rotations will occur at UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital center including the integrated Kentucky Children’s Hospital. The two offsite locations include Shriner’s Hospital for Children Ambulatory Surgery Center located across the street from the UK medical campus and the Lexington Surgery Center for additional ambulatory surgery experience, located less than 2 miles from the UK medical campus. As the children’s hospital responsible for the care of over half of the state and including a Level IV NICU, fellows will be exposed to a wide variety of pediatric surgical operations and different anesthetic techniques during training.

Didactic Experience

Clinical training will be supplemented with a didactic program via grand rounds, journal clubs, lectures, one-on-one seminars with the faculty, and simulation-based training. The fellow will be offered the opportunity to participate in clinical research and encouraged to present at a national conference after completion of a scholarly project. The overarching goals are to nurture postgraduate physicians and help them become experts in the field of pediatric anesthesiology, both as clinicians and educators.
