Anesthesiology Clinician Educator (ACE) Track

 

The UK Anesthesiology Clinician Educator (ACE) Track is an opportunity for residents interested in teaching and an academic medicine career to develop their skills and interests during residency training and begin building their teaching portfolio and academic CV.

ACE Track applications open annually in May for rising PGY2 residents.

ACE Track Curriculum and Program Components

 

Education/Training:

  • Completion of the UK GME Residents as Teachers Certificate program. Applicants should apply to the GME Certificate Program in the spring of the PGY1 year in order to begin in the PGY2 year. Successful completion includes completion of a minimum of 8 sessions over a two-year period. 
  • Completion of the UK IRB Human Research Protection (CITI) training and Responsible Conduct of Research training. 

Teaching and Educational Program Involvement:

  • Record a podcast and publish on ‘Anesthesia Learn on the Go’ 
  • Instruction in three medical school sessions [med student lectures, simulation events] 
  • Co-instruction of a Lunch and Learn session with a faculty mentor (as PGY4)
  • Instruction in two resident simulation events [PGY1 wellness day, Anesthesia Olympics, PGY1 simulation training]
  • Serve as a member of the Anesthesiology Residency Program Evaluation Committee (PEC)
  • Serve as a peer mentor for at least one junior level resident

Research:

  • Completion of a medical education research project in collaboration with one or more faculty mentors. Successful completion includes development and submission of the IRB protocol, completing the project and presenting the results as appropriate for the project (e.g. poster presentation, oral presentation, manuscript). Projects will be presented during GCC during the PGY4 year. 

Mentorship and Support:

  • Meet quarterly with an ACE Track faculty mentor in order to establish goals, track progress, navigate barriers, and achieve desired outcomes. 
  • One month of research elective will be provided in the PGY3 and PGY4 years. Additional research elective time may be requested for the PGY4 year dependent upon the individualized research needs/goals of the participant.
  • Funding will be provided by the Resident Education and Research Fund in order to support travel/presentation of the ACE research project at a national meeting. 

Duration of the Program:

Participants are expected to enter the program in July as a PGY2 and finish the program by the conclusion of their PGY4 year.
