The University of Kentucky Careers in Health care Internship Program (UK CHIP) is an immersive, year-long experience designed to inspire and prepare high school students for future careers in the health professions. Sponsored by the department of anesthesiology, perioperative, critical care, and pain medicine in collaboration with the larger UK College of Medicine, the program connects students directly with health care professionals, offering an unparalleled opportunity to explore the many pathways within medicine and health care.

Through structured rotations across a variety of disciplines — including nursing, medicine, radiology, pharmacy, physical therapy, and others — students gain firsthand insight into the realities of patient care, teamwork, and interprofessional collaboration that define modern health care. Each experience emphasizes critical thinking, professionalism, and compassion — the hallmarks of the UK HealthCare mission.

UK CHIP currently includes students from Woodford County High School and Bryan Station High School, with plans for continued expansion into additional area high schools. From August through May, students participate in rotations at UK HealthCare, attend educational sessions led by faculty and advanced practice providers, and reflect on their learning through presentations and guided mentorship.

The program represents a vital link between Kentucky’s high schools and its leading academic medical center, nurturing curiosity, confidence, and a sense of belonging in healthcare settings. By engaging students early, UK CHIP aims to strengthen the state’s future health care workforce—preparing motivated learners to pursue postsecondary education and careers that serve the health needs of Kentucky communities.
