Each year UK Athletics, UK HealthCare, and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging partner in the “We Back Pat” basketball game. This game, in honor of the legendary coach, Pat Summitt, who died of Alzheimer’s disease, brings awareness to Alzheimer’s research, care, and education.
During the Jan. 15 UK Women’s basketball game against the University of Florida, Dr. Pete Nelson, of the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging was recognized for his outstanding work as a leader in the field of dementia research. Dr. Nelson is an experimental neuropathologist and leader of the UK Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Neuropathology Core – which means, he does brain autopsies. With over 300 papers written in peer-reviewed journals, Pete's work at UK has provided insights into the impact of pathology in the aged brain, and how genetics may play a role in neurodegenerative diseases.
