17 Preliminary Surgery Intern Positions

UKs general surgery residency has space for 17 preliminary surgery intern positions each year. The department's preliminary surgery internship offers one year of clinical surgical training to residents. It's ideal for residents who are pursuing a general surgery residency or who have matched into an advanced residency position at UK or another institution. The program's curriculum provides broad-based experience in all surgical specialties, allowing first-year residents to observe patient care from a diverse array of conditions.

The program is committed to furthering the career of residents who wish to pursue careers in anesthesiology, emergency medicine, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, radiology, or urology.

One Month Specialty Elective

We endeavor to provide all preliminary interns with an ICU experience and tailor rotations to fit their interests. In addition, we offer a one-month elective which most use to gain experience in their specialty of choice. Elective rotations can be offered in a wide variety of specialties such as anesthesiology, cardiothoracic surgery, emergency medicine, family medicine, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, plastic surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, and urology.

Preliminary interns function as part of the surgical team and rotate on a similar schedule as categorical interns through UK Chandler Hospital, the Veteran's Administration Hospital, and UK Good Samaritan. The principles of patient preoperative and postoperative care serve as the program's basic curricula.

Curriculum

Operative experience at this level depend on the skills, abilities, and preferences of the resident. Preliminary surgery interns are given the opportunity to participate in intern specific conferences, the in-service training exam, intern oral exam, and MIS curriculum and are provided with educational resources such as SCORE curriculum and ACS Fundamentals of Surgery Curriculum. After the preliminary surgery year, residents are prepared to continue residency in general surgery or begin a residency in another specialty.

The department also provides a Surgical Research Core Group and a Research Publications Office to support clinical research projects with an emphasis on conference poster presentations and article submissions to peer-reviewed medical journals.

The department of surgery's residency programs participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). All residencies are accredited by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
