UK NEUROLOGY

The UK College of Medicine Department of Neurology’s missions are to (1) provide cutting edge neuroscience-related care to the citizens of Kentucky and beyond with a focus on those with complex neurologic conditions; (2) educate healthcare professionals, post-graduate fellows, residents, medical students, and the public about neurological disorders; (3) innovate and develop new knowledge to help reduce the burden of neurological disorders on our patients and society; and (4) be of service to the citizens of Kentucky.  We do this based on our core values of honesty and integrity, caring, collective responsibility, curiosity, excellence, with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

CARING FOR KENTUCKY AND BEYOND

Over forty adult and child neurologists, thirteen advanced practice providers, and four neuropsychologists in the department of neurology work with neurosurgeons and other specialists in the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute (KNI) as a highly coordinated, multi-disciplinary team addressing the diagnosis and treatment of patients with complex neurological conditions.

As the state’s flagship university, UK faculty and other providers serve Kentuckians both at our campus in Lexington and at outreach clinics throughout the Commonwealth.  Inpatient care at UK Neurology includes General Neurology, Epilepsy, and Vascular Neurology Services in state-of-the art dedicated units and through consultative assistance at UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital, UK Kentucky Children’s Hospital, and UK Good Samaritan Hospital.

As the main tertiary/quaternary referral center for the region, UK faculty and other providers participate in the care of not only a large volume of patients with common neurologic conditions, but also those with rare neurologic disorders across every neurologic subspecialty. The neurology department provides the highest standard of care in programs recognized for their clinical excellence, including a Joint Commission Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, an National Association of Epilepsy Centers accredited Level IV Epilepsy Center, a National ALS Society certified Treatment Center of Excellence, a National Multiple Sclerosis Society certified MS Center for Comprehensive Care, and an NIH-supported Alzheimer Disease Research Center (ADRC).

Comprehensive information on our clinical programs and services is provided on the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute website.

RESEARCH AND EDUCATION

UK College of Medicine Department of Neurology is highly engaged in clinical research with a dedicated clinical research office (CRO) supporting contract negotiations, regulatory requirements, and study coordinator support.  The NIH-funded UK Center for Clinical and Translational Science as well as the University Neuroscience Research Priority Area additionally supports neuroscience-related research in campus.  Other research support, projects, and opportunities are detailed in the Research section of our website.

Since the department’s inception, education has been the centerpiece of our department's academic program.  Today, the department of neurology has ACGME accredited residency programs in adult and neurology and child neurology, LCME accredited educational programs for third and fourth-year medical students, and offers post-residency clinical fellowships in Epilepsy (ACGME), Geriatrics Neurology (UCNS), Headache Medicine (UCNS), Clinical Neuropsychology, Movement Disorders, Vascular Neurology (ACGME), and a multidisciplinary fellowship in Neurointerventional Radiology.  Final approval of a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology (ACGME) is anticipated for 2024.   To learn more about UK Neurology Training programs, look up the specific program that interests you under the Education section of our website.
