In 2022, we also became one of only 15 epilepsy programs in the country to participate in the Epilepsy Learning Healthcare system (ELHS). UKHC Epilepsy includes 9 fellowship-trained epileptologists, including 2 pediatric epileptologists, an epilepsy trained APP, and a dedicated nurse coordinator who work closely with neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, neuroradiologists, social workers, and dedicated pharmacists to offer the full range of therapeutic options to patients including the latest anti-epileptic drugs, DBS and VNS therapy, ketogenic diets, and epilepsy surgery.

UKHC Epilepsy includes a 12-bed adult Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) housed in the new neurosciences' unit of Albert Chandler Hospital. Its 3-bed pediatric EMU is located in the Kentucky Children's Hospital nested within the Chandler Hospital complex. Outpatient ambulatory EEG studies are offered through the UK EEG laboratory. We also provide consultation and telemetry for patients across the Chandler Hospital complex and a remote EEG read service for select partner hospitals outside of the Lexington area. As an academic center, teaching and conducting research are integral to the UKHC Epilepsy program. We are highly involved in clinical trials involving epilepsy and anti-epileptic medications for infants, children and adults and provide all faculty with opportunities to engage and teach medical students, residents and/or fellows.
