UK researchers Hiroshi Saito, PhD, and David Rodgers, PhD, were among the recipients of over three dozen funding awards from the Kentucky IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (KY INBRE). Both researchers received KY INBRE Electron Microscopy (EM) vouchers to assist them in diabetes and obesity research.

KY INBRE is a statewide multi-million dollar, five-year renewable grant program funded by The National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). The organization is pleased to announce the awarding of a combined total of almost $1 million to its 2023 Awards grants and Electron Microscopy Core voucher recipients.

The vouchers cover the costs of sample preparation, assisted Electron Microscopy (EM) use at any of the three Kentucky INBRE network EM facilities located at University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, and Western Kentucky University.

Dr. Saito, a professor in the Research Division of the UK Department of Surgery, received funding to support his project: Mitochondrial abnormality in sepsis survivors.

Dr. Rodgers, an associate professor in the UK Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, received funding in support of his project: Insulin degrading enzyme in edosomal compartments and its role in the degradation of insulin and amyloid beta.
