Dr. Anil Duggal begins his practice as a specialist in hand and plastic surgery with the UK Division of Plastic Surgery in February 2017.

“We’re very glad to welcome such an accomplished plastic and hand surgeon to UK HealthCare,” said Dr. Henry Vasconez, division chief of the UK Department of Plastic Surgery. “Dr. Duggal brings a wealth of experience to central Kentucky that will be a great benefit to our patients and residents.”

That experience includes a year in Kentucky in 2011 as a fellow with the prestigious Christine M. Kleinert Institute for Hand and Microsurgery at the University of Louisville. During his fellowship year, Duggal had the honor of participating in a bilateral hand transplant. It was only the third time the procedure had ever been performed in the United States.

Since his fellowship, Dr. Duggal has been a practicing plastic surgeon and hand specialist in Ontario, Canada.

Four years later, he accepted a faculty appointment to the UK Department of Surgery. "Returning to Kentucky as an academic surgeon is a fortunate development in my surgical career," Duggal said.

“I’ve been very lucky. Since earning my medical degree at McMaster University, I have had great training opportunities and experiences in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery,” he continued.  Dr. Duggal has a Master of Science degree in Clinical Epidemiology as a well as a fellowship in Burns from the University of Alberta Firefighter’s Burn treatment Unit. Dr. Duggal completed his Plastic and Reconstructive surgery residency at McGill University in Montreal under the training of Dr. H. Bruce Williams.

Duggal started his practice at UK Chandler Hospital on February 1.

His wife and two children, a son and daughter, will finish the school year and join him in the Lexington area this summer. In the meantime, Dr. Duggal is looking forward to developing his surgical practice in central Kentucky and surgical education of residents in UK’s plastic surgery program.
