Several faculty members, residents, and fellows from the UK Department of Surgery will be featured speakers at the 2016 edition of the annual statewide Trauma and Emergency Medicine Symposium, scheduled for October 26 – 28 at The Campbell House in Lexington.

The three day symposium, presented by UK HealthCare CECentral, will feature sessions devoted to updates on trauma resuscitation; geriatric trauma; child abuse issues, including discussions of a trauma team’s legal responsibilities; traumatic brain injury; behavioral and mental health issues affecting both patients and providers; and discussions of current issues impacting Emergency Departments across the Commonwealth such as Kentucky’s efforts to address the opioid epidemic. The symposium is sponsored by the University of Kentucky Hospital, Norton HealthCare, Kentucky Children’s Hospital, Kosair Children’s Hospital, and the University of Louisville - KentuckyOne Health.

The main conference is scheduled to begin on Thursday morning, October 27. There are pre-conference activities schedule for Wednesday afternoon, October 26. Among the roster of 24 speakers and discussion moderators are several representatives from the UK Department of Surgery: Andrew Bernard, MD; Mack Drake, DO; John Draus, MD; Jon Hourigan, MD; Cynthia Talley, MD; Austin Ward, MD; and Zachary Warriner, MD.

Keynote speakers include the following:

R. Todd Maxon, MD, FACS, Trauma/Burn Medical Director, Arkansas Children’s Hospital - Development of a Trauma System.

Michael Nance, MD, director of the Pediatric Trauma Program at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia – Baseball, Hotdogs, Apple Pie and 9mm Handguns: Kids and Guns.

Oscar Guillamondegui, MD, director of the Vanderbilt Multidisciplinary Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic – Traumatic Brain Injury: A trauma surgeon’s perspective.

The symposium is approved for CME credits to all healthcare providers and professionals caring for trauma, emergency, and critical care patients.
