Division Administrator Pete Rogers invites the staff and physicians of the Department of Surgery to discover what he and the world’s polar bears already know. There is nothing more refreshing and personally satisfying than a quick plunge into a pool on an early Saturday afternoon in February.

Of course, there is the added benefit of supporting Special Olympics Kentucky. The Polar Plunge is one of the organization’s largest and most popular fundraisers of the year, according to its website.

2016 will be the third year that Rogers has participated in the Polar Plunge. Yet he has only taken the dip once. In 2015, the benefit was cancelled because of the record-breaking winter storm. But in 2014, he did go forward with it in the name of Surgical IBU and he has the You Tube video to prove it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rehd9OSNaLo.

In 2016, he hopes to lead Team Surgery Shenanigans to its inaugural plunge in the parking lot of the Texas Roadhouse on Richmond Road. An invitation for team members or donors went out among the Departments of Surgery and Urology and just prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.

The overall goal of the Polar Plunge is to raise $75,000 for Special Olympics Kentucky. As of Monday, Nov 30, a little over $16,000 has been pledged. Rogers’ hopes to meet or exceed a goal of $850 and welcome a team of some 23 members. "Not everyone team member has to take the polar plunge," Rogers quickly explained.
