The 2015 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Surgeons, who is also of the nation’s leading voices in surgical education, will be offering his insights and commentary at the second annual Richard W. Schwartz Memorial Lecture and Symposium in the W.T. Young Library Auditorium on Thursday afternoon, October 22.

John Weigelt, MD, FACS, is Editor in Chief of the Journal of Surgical Education and widely regarded as the architect of the trauma program at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). In his capacity as a faculty member and practicing surgeon at MCW, Dr. Weigelt is the Milt and Lidy Lunda Charles Aprahamian Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Trauma and Critical Care.

Dr. Weigelt is the recipient of numerous honors for his dedication to quality surgical patient care and his mentorship of residents and fellows in the field of trauma surgery and critical care. Notably, he earned the Wangensteen Award for Excellence in Teaching from the University of Minnesota and in September, 2015, the American College of Surgeons announced that Dr. Weigelt will be the receipient of their annual Distinguished Service Award.

He remains active as a general surgeon with specialty interest in trauma surgery and critical care.  His research interests include surgical infections, clinical outcomes, and educational approaches to training surgeons.

Prior to Dr. Weigelt’s lecture, the UK Department of Surgery will host the Schwartz Surgical Research Symposium beginning at 1 p.m. Presentations will cover a range of research and clinical studies being conducted by faculty and special guests of the department. The schedule of presentations is forthcoming. Visit the Richard W. Schwartz Memorial Lectureship website for specific information as it becomes available.

The Department of Surgery established the Richard W. Schwartz Memorial Lectureship and Symposium to honor to the late surgeon’s legacy as a clinician and educator. His influence touched all who had the honor of working alongside him.

The annual event will conclude with a reception at the Hilary Boone Faculty Center.

Those who plan to attend the symposium and reception may RSVP with Linda Silvestri at 859-323-6346, x224 or by email at Lsilv2@uky.edu.
