Plastic Surgery visiting professor presented update on face transplants

For its annual Andrew M. Moore, Sr. Visiting Professor lecture, the UK Division of Plastic Surgery welcomed Frank Papay, MD, chair of the Dermatology and Plastic Surgery Institute at Cleveland Clinic, to update regional practitioners on the research and ethics of face transplants. The Grand Rounds presentation is scheduled for Saturday morning from 9:30 – 10:30am in the Pavilion A auditorium of A.B. Chandler Hospital.

Dr. Papay has been a surgeon with Cleveland Clinic for nearly 25 years specializing in craniofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery. He is a practitioner, researcher, medical device inventor, and a professor of surgery with the Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University.

The Division of Plastic Surgery at UK will host Dr. Papay from Friday, May 13 – Saturday, May 14.

On Friday, he will be talking with colleagues and residents about developing markets in Craniomaxillofacial Surgery, with a focus on the treatment of severe and persistent migraine headaches, obstructive sleep apnea, and neuromodulation. He will also be sharing his experience as a researcher and entrepreneur. Among his extensive list of accomplishments as a surgeon and innovator, Dr. Papay is the "primary inventor of eight medical device patents and ten patent applications for a variety of medical devices and craniofacial surgical procedures."

He has also served as a finalist judge for the collegiate inventor’s competition sponsored by the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

On Saturday morning, he will be the keynote presenter at a Plastic Surgery Grand Rounds focusing on nasal valve reconstruction and at a Surgical Grand Rounds in a presentation entitled: “Face Transplants: Ethics and Current Update.”

 Dr. Papay has been the leader of a multidisciplinary team that has performed face transplant procedures at Cleveland Clinic. Cleveland Clinic has produced a video presentation profiling the second face transplant performed there.
