New Vascular Surgeon to begin practice at end of July
The University of Kentucky’s Department of Surgery is pleased to welcome a new surgeon, Sam Tyagi, MD, to its vascular and endovascular surgery faculty beginning in late July 2017.
Though born in Canada, by the time Sam Tyagi had reached age 7, his family had lived in Stony Brook, New York and Columbia, Missouri before finally settling in Jackson, Mississippi to accommodate his father’s, Suresh Tyagi, Ph.D., various appointments as an NIH-funded researcher and professor in physiology and biophysics .
In 2003, Dr. Suresh Tyagi accepted an offer from the University of Louisville to hold the Stodghill Endowed Professorship in Biomedical Research.
Sam Tyagi did not follow his father to Kentucky right away. He was busy finishing his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Ole Miss. But afterward, he was accepted into the University of Louisville’s School of Medicine to earn his medical degree. He subsequently completed a general surgery residency from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and a vascular surgery fellowship from the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia.
In addition to himself, he has a brother and sister who are both in medical residency at Michigan State. His brother is a resident in Emergency Medicine and his sister is beginning an internal medicine residency.
During his general surgery residency, his interest in vascular surgery was piqued, he said, by excellent faculty mentorship and also because by the diversity of cases that fall under the specialty’s area of interest.
“The diversity of vascular surgery cases are not contained to one specific area of the body, which had a great appeal to me during residency,” Dr. Tyagi said.
Returning to Kentucky with his wife and two children, a boy and girl, has clearly been a welcome choice, said Tyagi. In addition to being close to his family in Louisville, “UK provides an opportunity to move upward and forward in terms of teaching, clinical practice, and research into vascular surgery.”
