Medtronic sponsors wet lab for Cardiothoracic Surgery faculty and residents

The UK Cardiothoracic Surgery residency ran a wet lab to work with the latest surgical technology in the Center for Advanced Training and Simulation (CATS) lab last September. The wet lab was run by Sean Johnson, MD, and Michael Bolanos, MD, chief residents of the CT Fellowship and I-6 residency programs

The wet lab was sponsored Medtronic, one of the global leaders in medical device and technology development.

Surgeons were able to try their hand at using a new electronic stapler for performing a lobectomy, practiced suturing pig hearts, and also performed fundoplication, a type of laparascopic surgery for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Pigs’ lungs and hearts were provided through the UK Butcher Shop with the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment.

Participants included several CT interns and medical students on rotation in CT Surgery.
