The University of Kentucky College of Medicine and UK HealthCare are pleased to announce that William Barlow (Barry) Inabnet III, MD, MHA, FACS, the Johnston-Wright endowed professor and chair of surgery, will take on an additional role as surgeon-in-chief of UK HealthCare.

Through the position, Inabnet will work to enhance the medical education experience for learners pursuing surgery-related career paths and serve as a liaison between the department of surgery and UK HealthCare’s leadership team to develop a strategy for advancement of clinical care. He also will work to build upon the collaborations of all departments involving surgery and the peri-operative platform.

Inabnet joined the College of Medicine in the fall of 2019 and has exhibited his capabilities as a strong leader, devoted mentor, mediator and problem-solver. At the beginning of his tenure, he set a clear vision for promoting high-quality clinical care, continued research growth, excellence in education and faculty development.

Before arriving at UK, Inabnet served as the Eugene W. Friedman, MD, Professor of Surgery in the Mount Sinai Health System, where he also was the surgical director of the Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and the system chief of endocrine surgery. Under his leadership, the Mount Sinai Weight Loss Surgery Program developed into one of the world’s premier programs.

Inabnet has been inducted into the Southern Surgical Association, the American Surgical Association, and the French National Academy of Surgery, and was the fourth U.S. surgeon to be inducted into the French Academy of Medicine. He also holds leadership roles in the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, American Association of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Thyroid Association.
