Dr. Hiroyuki Hirasawa, a research scientist and pioneer in blood purification therapy in Intensive Care Units, will be the featured presenter in the regular “Hangin’ With Zwisch” medical research series on Thursday, June 9 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm in the MN 463 auditorium.

Dr. Hirasawa comes to the University of Kentucky College of Medicine as a special guest of Dr. Hiroshi Saito, a member of the UK Department of Surgery research faculty.

“I met Dr. Hirasawa at the Shock Society Conference in 2015. He is only going to be in the United States a few times, but he agreed to visit the UK medical campus to lecture and meet with researchers and scientists before the next annual Shock Society Conference,” Dr. Saito said. “I believe that his talk will benefit surgeons and sepsis researchers at UK.”

Dr. Hirasawa is a prominent physician scientist in the field of critical care medicine. A professor emeritus in the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine at the Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine, his distinguished career includes a term as chair of Chiba University’s Department of Surgery and associate editor of the medical research journal, Shock.

He is currently director of the Eastern Chiba Medical Center in Japan and president of the International Federation of Shock Societies.

The title of his Hangin’ with Zwisch presentation will be “Hypercytokinemia in Critical Care and Countermeasures with Continuous Hemodiafiltration using Cytokine-Adsorbing Hemofilters.” During this lecture, Dr. Hirasawa will address the following topics:

  • The significance of hypercytokinemia in the pathophysiology of critical illness.
  • The efficacy of blood purification as the countermeasures against hypercytokinemia, and
  • The efficacy of continuous hemodiafiltration with a cytokine adsorbing hemofilter in the treatment of sepsis.

Hangin’ With Zwisch is open to anyone. Lunch is available to those who register in advance for the presentation. To register, contact Linda Combs at lcomb4@uky.edu.
