Guest lecturer for 2017 Bruce Lucas Symposium to speak on impact of opioid epidemic on organ donation
David Goldberg, MD, MSCE, a senior fellow from the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics in Philadelphia, will be a special guest lecturer at the 2017 edition of the Bruce Lucas Hepatology and Liver Transplant Symposium on Friday, October 13 at the Kroger Field Recruitment Room. Dr. Goldberg will present findings from studies he has published on two controversial issues in organ transplantation: the impact of the opioid epidemic on organ donations and the risk level posed by hepatitis-C infected organ donors.
Dr. Goldberg, an assistant professor of Medicine and Medical Director for Living Donor Liver Transplantation at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, has published numerous studies in the area of organ procurement, the geographic disparities in donor populations, and the attendant difficulties in the availability of organs.
In 2016, he was the lead author in a study published by the American Journal of Transplantation – Improving Organ Utilization to Help Overcome the Tragedies of the Opioid Epidemic. He was also an author in a study on Hepatitis-C infected organs published in the September 2017 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.
In addition to Dr. Goldberg’s presentation, the annual Bruce Lucas Symposium will feature 10 presentations from surgeons and clinical specialists principally from the UK HealthCare Transplant Center. Subjects to be covered will include Liver Transplantation; Liver cancer; Management of complications associated with Cirrhosis; Hepatocellular Carcinoma; and Immunosuppression.
