On May 1, the UK Department of Surgery welcomed Dr. Jonathan Kiev as the newest faculty member in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He is the second thoracic surgeon to join the division in 2017.

Dr. Jon Kiev has been in surgical practice since completing his residency in general surgery at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. He completed subsequent fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center, minimally invasive thoracic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, and advanced thoracic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Professionally, Dr. Kiev was in private practice as a general surgeon from 1994 through 1998 before continuing on in his chosen specialty. Prior to his appointment at the University of Kentucky, Kiev has served on the Department of Surgery faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University, where he was Director of Thoracic Surgical Services. At Marshall University School of Medicine in Huntington, West Virginia, Dr. Kiev was an associate professor of surgery.

Dr. Kiev’s work in thoracic surgery and oncology, as both a practitioner and researcher, was a factor in accepting an appointment with the University of Kentucky.

“UK’s work in minimally invasive surgery and the reputation of the Markey Cancer Center were all reasons why I accepted the offer to come to Kentucky,” Kiev said. “UK is well known for its excellence in thoracic and cardiac surgery.”

Kiev was also familiar with Lexington from his visits to the area while a thoracic surgical oncology specialist at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America serving Chicago’s northern suburban communities.

Kiev joins an increasing number of thoracic surgical specialists in practice at UK HealthCare. Visit UK HealthCare’s Cardiothoracic Surgery page for information about clinical services.
