Following the weekly Surgery Grand Rounds presentation last Wednesday, May 4, the UK Department of Surgery named the 2016 recipients of the Ward O. Griffen Award and the Ben Eiseman Award. In addition, the Department presented 10 faculty members amd 12 residents with Excellence in Education awards.


Before the teaching awards were presented, Dr. Andrew Bernard, far left, and Dr. Cynthia Talley, far right, recognized two residents who had received the Trauma Faculty Scholarship. Dr. Zachary Warriner, left, was honored as the 2015-16 recipient and Dr. Katrina Winkler, right, received the scholarship for 2016-17.

The Ben Eiseman Surgery Teaching Award for Excellence in Resident Education and the Ward O. Griffen Surgery Teaching Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education were established in 1999 to honor faculty members who have demonstrated excellent educational skills and contributed significantly to medical student and resident education over the past academic year.

Dr. Ben Eisemen was the founding chair of the UK Department of Surgery. He served from 1961-67. Dr. Ward Griffen was also a former department chair.


The 2016 recipient of the Ben Eisemen Award is Dr. Ching-Wei Tzeng, Surgical Oncology. Presenting the award is Dr. Jay Zwischenberger, Chair of the Department of Surgery.


The 2016 recipient of the Ward O. Griffen Award is Dr. Joseph Iocono from the division of Pediatric Surgery. Presenting the award is Dr. Jay Zwischenberger, Chair of the Department of Surgery.
