To begin 2025, Sibu Saha, MD, a professor in the division of cardiothoracic surgery, established a new research award for College of Medicine medical students or residents who demonstrate excellence and promise in the field of cardiovascular research.
The Saha Award for Medical Student and Resident Cardiovascular Research is intended to provide monetary support to learners who are actively engaged in cardiovascular research. The award is an extension of Dr. Saha's interests in supporting educational opportunities in research at the UK College of Medicine.
The terms of the gift call for the annual presentation of four research awards of approximately $1,000 each, two in the spring and two in the fall. According to Lillian Sims, PhD, acting director of medical student research in the College of Medicine, a formal application process is being developed and will be made available as soon as possible to medical students and residents.
The application process calls for a three-person committee comprised of volunteer faculty from vascular surgery, cardiology, or cardiothoracic surgery to review applicants and recommend recipients to the Dean of the College of Medicine. Awards will be presented at College of Medicine research events held throughout the academic year.
