Education Overview

Didactics on the colon and rectal surgery service are open to all learners. Each week of the month features a different area of interest, including:

Journal Club during which the colon and rectal surgery fellow and general surgery chief resident will co-host and lead discussion of a selected article, typically from Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, Annals of Surgery, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, or Colorectal Disease

IBD Conference - a clinical conference involving division faculty as well as adult and pediatric gastroenterology, and pediatric surgery clinicians. Cases are presented to optimize medical and surgical management of these diseases. Colon and rectal surgery fellows are expected to participate in this conference through presentation and discussion of select cases that they have encountered.

Fellowship Educational Activities

The colon and rectal surgery fellow has weekly, one-hour dedicated didactics with program faculty. During this time a chapter in The ASCRS Textbook of Colon and Rectal Surgery or a CARSEP question bank selection will be reviewed using a 'flipped classroom' education model. Additional conferences specifically available to the fellow include:

Pelvic Floor Conference during which MRI defecography and anorectal physiology studies are reviewed with division faculty.

Multidisciplinary GI and Rectal Cancer Tumor Board weekly conference during which fellows participate, and present when appropriate, select relevant cases that they have encountered.
