Eugene A Hessel II, MD

Dr. Hessel completed his medical education at the University of California School of Medicine. After medical school, he completed a rotating internship at King County Hospital and a seven-year general and thoracic surgery residency at the University of Washington, during which he also completed a postdoctoral research fellowship with the NIH.

He then spent 15 years as a cardiac surgeon at the University of Washington, thereafter he completed his anesthesiology residency at the University of Washington, followed by a cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. He has been at the University of Kentucky since 1984, and holds appointments in cardiothoracic surgery, pediatrics and neurosurgery.

Dr. Hessel was a former program director of the anesthesia residency, and chief of the division of cardiothoracic anesthesia. He has published more than 100 papers and more than 20 book chapters and is on the editorial board of Journal Extracorporeal Technology, Journal Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, and Seminars in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia.
