The UK College of Medicine Department of Physiology recently gathered to celebrate the retirement of two longtime professors. Lu-Yuan Lee, PhD, and Steve Estus, PhD, had a combined service of 78 years to the department.

Speeches shared during the event spoke to their contributions in science and service, as well as their character. Dr. Estus was praised by Lance Johnson, PhD, chair of neuroscience, for his mentorship of countless students, calm problem‑solving during stressful moments, and an unwavering commitment to doing things right. Tim McClintock, PhD, professor of physiology, spoke of Dr. Lee's innumerable publications and scientific contributions, his willingness to lend a helping hand, and, above all, his kindness.

Whether advising young researchers, collaborating with peers, or simply offering encouragement, Drs. Lee and Estus have always been known for their willingness to help others.

Former students also shared how both professors influenced their confidence, curiosity, and career paths. Many credited Drs. Lee and Estus with instilling not only technical knowledge, but also a sense of responsibility to approach science with rigor, humility, and compassion.

The event served as a reminder that the true measure of an academic career lies as much in people as in publications. Their legacy will remain in the people they trained, the standards they set, and the friendships they built over decades of work.

We wish them the very best of luck and fulfillment in this next season of life.
