2021 Physiology Research Retreat

The Physiology Research Retreat is the marquee research event for the entire department. This one day event include scientific talks, trainee presentations, collaborative activities, and a judged poster session with recognition for outstanding presenters.

Collaboration Session
Labs will be paired together for two separate collaboration sessions. Faculty will submit a collaboration profile during the registration process.

90 Second Poster Pitch 
Advertise your poster by giving a 90 second, one slide overview.  The event is open to all trainees presenting a poster. You must register for this event and be willing to submit your slide a few days prior to the presentation.

Poster Session
Judged poster session open to all non-faculty attendees. Top presentations will be recognized. NOTE: Department of Physiology Graduate Students are expected to present a poster.

Judging
Trainees and Faculty will be teamed up to judge posters together. Those presenting a poster will not judge during the same session. NOTE: Department of Physiology Graduate Students are expected to judge a poster

Group Photo & Dress Code
Business casual attire. We are excited to take our first department group photo in over 10 years! 

Trivia Social Hour
Unwind from the day and enjoy a game of trivia. This team-based event is organized by a local entertainment company that hosts Trivia Nights at multiple establishments across Lexington.

2020 Physiology Research Retreat

NEW THIS YEAR! Trivia Competition: Unwind from the day with a beverage and game of Trivia.  Local Trivia Action will be on site to coordinate a game of trivia.  Prizes will be given for best team name and best overall scores.  Get your team together and plan to have some fun.

Group Photo: About every decade, the Department of Physiology takes a group photo including everyone in the department.  We will take this photo on the Social Staircase at the Gatton Student Center, immediately following lunch or about 12:30.   

Trainee Podium Presentations: Two 15 minute presentations by nominated graduate students and/or postdocs. Send nominations to Mariana Nikolova-Karakashian (mnikolo@uky.edu) by date TBD. Nominations consist of a title and abstract for the presentation, and a CV. Self-nominations accepted. The Research Committee will select and notify presenters.

90 Second Poster Pitch: Advertise your poster by giving a 90 second, one slide overview.  The event is open to PhD students and Postdocs presenting a poster.  You must register for this event and be willing to submit your slide a few days prior to the presentation.  Participation is optional.

Poster Sessions:  All trainees and staff are invited to present a poster.  Participation by graduate students is mandatory.  To participate in this session, you must submit your Poster Title, Authors and 3 sentence maximum Project Narrative when you register for the event.

Travel Award Lottery:  Graduate students and postdocs that score in the top 30% of poster judging and also present a 90 Second Poster Pitch (or are selected for a Trainee Podium Presentation) will be entered into a drawing for one of two $500 Travel Awards.  You must be present at the Awards Ceremony to claim the travel award.

Poster Award Lottery:  All trainees and staff (excluding recipients of $500 Travel Awards) that score in the top 30% of poster judging will be entered into a drawing for UK or Physiology logoed prizes.  You must be present at the Awards Ceremony to claim a prize.

Individual Photos:  A professional photographer will be on site during each of the poster sessions to provide professional individual photos or lab group photos.

Morning Session - Education - For Tenure-Track Faculty (joint/research-track faculty, and trainee attendance optional)

  • Education related presentations, may include GAC reccommended initiatives requiring the vote of tenure-track faculty

Lunch - For all department-affiliated personnel

Afternoon Session - Research For all department-affiliated personnel

  • 90 Second Research Blitz - open to all, required for PGY graduate students
    Advertise your poster by giving a 90 second, static, one slide overview.  The event is open to all attendees presenting a poster.  You must register for this event and be willing to submit your slide a few days prior to the presentation.

  • Judged Poster Presentation - open to all, required for PGY graduate students
    Submit your presentation title to participate in the judged poster session. The posters will be judged in 4 categories – Postdocs, Graduate Students, Staff, and Undergraduates. You must register for this event. All PGY faculty will participate in poster judging.  Each trainee that presents a poster will also be asked to judge a poster.  

  • Presentation Awards
    Prizes will be given for the top poster presentations.

TRAINEE OPPORTUNITIES
Trainee Presentations: Speakers will be selected from abstracts submitted by trainees. Deadline for submission is April 27th. Speakers will give 10 minute presentation with 5 minutes for questions.

Research Blitz: Trainees are strongly encouraged to participate in the Research Blitz. In this activity, speakers will be given 60 seconds to present their research on a single PowerPoint slide. It’s fast, it’s informative, and it’s fun! If you’d like to participate, make sure to select this event when registering. Must register by April 27th AND select Research Blitz activity. Must be willing to submit Blitz slide a few days prior to the event.

Poster Session: Submit an abstract to participate in the judged poster session. Must register and submit abstract by May 11th. Awards given to top presenters!
