Working in medicine is deeply meaningful and deeply heavy. Physicians carry the emotional weight of the job every day: the stress, the losses, and the moments that stay with you long after a shift ends. Left unaddressed, this weight can show up as secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout.

The Weight of Care is a six-month group coaching program for University of Kentucky College of Medicine physicians. It creates a trusted space to reflect on the emotional toll of clinical work, build sustainable stress-reduction skills, and connect with peers who understand what you carry. Each session is grounded in Dr. Brian Miller's CE-CERT model (Components for Enhancing Clinician Experience & Reducing Trauma), a clinician-focused skills framework for recognizing, engaging with, and responding to stress throughout the day.

Registration Opens September 21, 2026

Registration Closes: 10/16/2026 - 5 p.m.
Cohort assignments sent to participants: 11/6/2026 - 5 p.m.
Participants will need to accept their place in the coaching program by: 11/6/2026 - 5 p.m.

Deliverables

By the end, participants will:

  • Recognize and respond to occupational stress in the moment (using a CE-CERT skill during or right after a shift) so it doesn't build up over time
  • Use coaching skills to support a colleague, learner, or team member in both clinical and leadership sessions
  • Draw on a trusted network of physicians across departments who understand the weight you carry

Will there be more cohorts offered?

  • Yes – this program has a rolling registration, meaning you can sign up for the program at any time using the link on the program webpage. Once the scheduled cohorts are filled, you will be placed on the priority waitlist for the next cohort, and notified when new cohort dates are scheduled.
  • Registration for each cohort closes approximately 11–12 weeks before that cohort begins, so we can confirm participation and give everyone adequate notice. Current upcoming cohort dates and registration deadlines are listed on the previous page and the program’s webpage.
  • We know clinical schedules make it hard for everyone to register at the same pace — overnight shifts, being out of office, or other demands can get in the way. If you miss a registration deadline, you'll be placed on the priority waitlist for the next cohort.
