About Arts for Well-Being in Academic Medicine

Arts for Well-Being in Academic Medicine (AWiAM) is a collection of participatory experiences designed to support organizational well-being through creative engagement that builds human-centered connections. AWiAM recognizes that academic environments are shaped not only by systems and structures, but also by the quality of the human relationships that exist within them.

Connection in the workplace is not abstract, it directly influences how people communicate, collaborate, and experience their work. Everyday interactions, such as how we greet one another, the tone we use in conversation or email, the time we take to listen, and the ways we offer or ask for help, shape the strength of our working relationships over time. Together, these moments build social capital: The trust, familiarity, and relational strength that support collaboration, problem-solving, and support during both routine work and times of challenge.

How AWiAM Supports Organizational Well-Being

AWiAM was created to intentionally support connections by offering shared experiences that help people better understand one another across roles, departments, and environments. Through participatory arts-based experiences, individuals are invited to pause, reflect, and engage in ways that make relationship-building visible and accessible within the workday.

AWiAM is one of the many engagement experiences and workplace practices available to support well-being. While these arts-based offerings may not resonate with everyone, they sit alongside other organizational resources and supports that individuals can draw upon to improve their experience at work. Together, these efforts help create conditions that support connection, increase joy at work, and strengthen organizational well-being.

Our Approach

AWiAM uses accessible approaches such as visual exploration, movement, storytelling, and creative reflection. These experiences are not focused on artistic skill or performance. Instead, participatory arts are used as tools to support communication, perspective-taking, and relational awareness. Each AWiAM session is intentionally designed to support individual wellness while strengthening organizational well-being. Participants are invited to reflect on how everyday interactions contribute to a community of honor and connection, while also recognizing the role organizations play in creating environments where open communication and connection are possible.
