Kenya Outreach Program
About the Program
The Kenya Outreach Program provides advanced otologic care to individuals living in East Africa. Founded in 2012 by Matthew Bush, MD, this voluntary program was formed in collaboration with the University of Nairobi Department of Otolaryngology. Each year multiple residents accompany Dr. Bush and gain valuable clinical and social experience.
Who We Serve
The Kenya Outreach Program primarily serves patients with chronic ear disease while training international residents in common otologic techniques including tympanoplasty and tympanomastoidectomy. Additional educational activities include inpatient rounds within Kenyatta National Hospital along with lecture series given by University of Kentucky faculty and residents. Another key mission is provision of donated otologic instruments, including drills and a facial nerve monitor.
Our Goals
Relationship-building is an important objective of this program, and UK otolaryngology residents also periodically have the chance to host visiting residents and faculty from the University of Nairobi. It is our belief that we can learn as much from our international colleagues as they can learn from us. Therefore, the UK Department of Otolaryngology makes an intentional effort to facilitate learning that can be taken back to Kenya for the benefit of patient care worldwide.
