Wellness In Training Committee 

Devoted to helping GME learners achieve their highest potential through the integration of the physical, social, emotional, environmental and economic aspects of wellness. This committee was established to develop recommendations for a systematic and sustainable approach to support wellness and resilience within our GME trainees. 

Chaired by Asha Shenoi, MD, assistant dean of Graduate Medical Education.

Needle Stick Injury

Step 1: Immediately wash exposed area with soap and water and treat injury, if needed. If eyes are splashed with a potential bloodborne pathogen, immediately flush eyes at closest eyewash station and proceed to the ED for eye exam.

Step 2: Report exposure to Infection Prevention. Call 270-745-1000 and ask for the IP nurse on-call (available 24 hours/7 days a week). Infection Prevention will assist in testing the source patient and with testing the resident/fellow, as needed, as well as provide counseling to the exposed individual. All results will be reported by the IP directly to the healthcare associate involved. If an Infectious Disease consult is required, the IP will make the arrangements and notify the exposed individual.

Step 3: Report the occurrence to Workers Care: 800-440-6285.

Live Health Online

Members of UK health plans can participate in a new service called LiveHealth Online. Connect with a medical professional through the Internet for advice regarding minor primary-care conditions, such as the flu, colds, pink eye and more. They can also send prescriptions to your pharmacy. Visits cost just $10 for members of UK health plans, except for the UK indemnity plan, which is also subject to co-insurance: https://livehealthonline.com/

Lactation Spaces

Designated lactation spaces are located in the CHER building, as well as at The Burrow (residency call house). At the CHER building, private lactation space is provided in the Resident Workroom; room CHER 207. Residents may also utilize The Burrow for their lactation needs. Both spaces offer comfortable, private area, with access to refrigerator for storage and sink for cleaning/sanitizing.  

Transportation 

The Morehead family residency program will reimburse the below taxi companies if a resident is too fatigued to drive home. The residency also has a location called "The Burrow" where residents can rest and sleep while on night float or on-call weekends.

"The Burrow"

24/7 access the 5 bedroom, 2 bathroom program call house, located in the neighborhood just behind St. Claire Regional Medical Center. This call house, designated “The Burrow”, is a place for our Family Medicine residents to reflect, rest, relax, rejuvenate and reconnect while on night float or on-call weekends; both with their families, as well as with their residency co-horts.

The Burrow Family Medicine Residence also fulfills the requirement set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) which states that safe, quiet, clean, and private sleep/rest facilities available and accessible for residents with proximity appropriate for safe patient care.

St. Claire HealthCare Pastoral Care Services 

 

Chapel is located on the second floor of the hospital and is available for reflection and prayer. It is open Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. If you would like access to the chapel on evenings or weekends, call 606.783.6767 to ask Security to let you in.

Lexington Medical Society Physician Wellness Program (PWP)

GME has contracted with a psychology group to provide support for our residents and fellows. This psychology group is not affiliated with University of Kentucky so services won’t be billed to health insurance and services are completely confidential. Services include individual counseling, couples/family sessions, and sessions with spouse/partners alone. These confidential and free counseling services are available to any UK resident or fellow (not just physicians!). For appointments call (859) 218-5862.

Free Mental Health Counseling

UK offers employees and their family members 5 free therapy sessions per fiscal year. They are external to the University, offer late afternoon, evening, and weekend hours, and learners can reach out to them directly to schedule an appointment.
